A U.S. judge will meet behind closed doors with government lawyers on Friday to work out a process to refund up to $175 billion in illegally imposed tariffs, Reuters reports. One judge has called the meeting a “settlement meeting.” Judge Richard Eaton of the U.S. Court of International Trade will meet with lawyers representing the Customs and Border Protection agency, which is responsible for refunding more than 300,000 importers who paid tariffs deemed unconstitutional. Government lawyers have stated that the process for refunding Trump’s tariffs is unprecedented in scale, requiring the manual review of tens of millions of tariff payment records. While U.S. courts are generally open to the public, judges sometimes discuss scheduling or how to handle sensitive information privately with the parties involved. The court’s website schedule indicates that Friday’s meeting will be a “closed-door meeting.” On February 20, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Trump exceeded his authority, and that most of the tariffs were unconstitutional, disrupting key aspects of his economic policies.
