Members of the UK Treasury Select Committee and the All-Party Crypto & Digital Assets Group (APPG) have called for an immediate ban on donations to political parties in the form of cryptocurrencies. This proposal stems from recent controversy surrounding the influx of "dark money" into the political system, with MPs arguing that the anonymity of crypto assets could be used to circumvent existing transparency requirements for political funds. The report points out that blockchain addresses are difficult to verify the actual beneficiaries of, or can be used to conceal the source of funds, posing risks of foreign interference and money laundering. Some investigations have also found that some crypto donations in the winter of 2025 could be traced back to overseas IP addresses. According to the proposal, political parties should liquidate existing crypto assets and refuse future related donations to ensure that political funds return to the traditional financial system. Crypto industry organizations believe that a blanket ban is an overreaction and suggest improving transparency through measures such as enhanced KYC (Know Your Customer) procedures. (FinanceFeeds)
