The Trump administration will appeal a federal judge's ruling blocking its ban on government use of Anthropic technology. The Justice Department filed a notice in court Thursday stating it will appeal a ruling last month by Judge Rita F. Lin of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California in San Francisco. The judge had previously suspended the government's plans to sever ties with Anthropic to maintain the status quo while the legal dispute continued, but she set aside the ruling for a week to give the government an opportunity to appeal. Anthropic filed the lawsuit challenging the Department of Defense's decision to claim its technology threatens the U.S. supply chain. In its March 26 ruling, the judge agreed with Anthropic's argument that the government's reasons for imposing the ban on national security grounds were questionable. The judge considered the move more like a "punishment" of Anthropic, as the company requested assurances that its technology would not be used to spy on Americans or for autonomous weapons deployment.
