Vitalik Buterin has commented on an incident involving a man using a hairdryer to manipulate the Polymarket Paris weather market, profiting approximately $34,000. According to Foresight News, Buterin emphasized that events like this, along with the Myrnohrad incident, highlight the necessity for critical systems to use the median from at least three independent sources as a basic requirement.
Foresight News notes that Myrnohrad is a significant town near Pokrovsk in Ukraine's Donetsk region, which was a hotspot on the Russia-Ukraine front line. Polymarket hosted several high-volume prediction markets, exceeding $1.3 million, betting on when Russian forces would fully occupy the city or specific junctions/train stations. Subsequently, the Institute for the Study of War's (ISW) interactive map of Ukraine's war situation was edited without authorization. The ISW stated that an analyst internally manipulated the map, which briefly showed Russian forces advancing and controlling a key intersection/area in Myrnohrad, although this did not occur. As a result, Polymarket used this map as a data source and judged the market as 'Yes' for Russian forces occupying the area ahead of time, leading to substantial returns for some bettors.
