Micron Workers in Taiwan Weigh Strike Over Bonus Dispute

Micron Technology workers in Taoyuan and Taichung, Taiwan, are considering a strike over bonus distribution, with unions saying they represent nearly 10,000 of about 15,000 employees at the two sites and that more than 80% of members support the move. According to ChainCatcher, the dispute centers on whether Micron’s incentive plan adequately reflects profitability, with unions seeking a one-time extra bonus this fiscal year and quarterly profit sharing equal to 15% of operating profit starting in fiscal 2027. Micron previously said it would issue its highest performance bonus on record, but the unions said the company has not clearly explained how performance is calculated and that the plan appears more closely tied to revenue than profit. Micron, the world’s third-largest memory chip maker, reported third-quarter revenue of $4.146 billion and net profit of $282.4 million, with a market value of about $1.1 trillion. Taiwan is Micron’s largest manufacturing base, where it has invested NT$1.4 trillion to produce DRAM and HBM. If a strike goes ahead, it could affect global memory chip supply. The Taichung Science Park Bureau said it is closely monitoring the situation and has prepared labor mediation measures. Samsung unions previously made similar profit-sharing demands and later secured a special bonus pool equal to 10.5% of operating profit for the chip division.
