South Korea Plans Presidential Office in Sejong by 2029, Moves 350 Public Institutions

South Korea said on Thursday it will establish a presidential office in the administrative city of Sejong by August 2029 and relocate about 350 public institutions from the Seoul metropolitan area. According to Sina Finance, the government said the relocation work is expected to begin in 2027. The government also plans to build another National Assembly building in Sejong by 2033. South Korean Prime Minister Han Seong-sook said the measures are part of a broader strategy to address the overconcentration of population, capital, companies, and infrastructure in the capital region, while other parts of South Korea face population decline. According to the government statement, South Korea will begin moving central government agencies to Sejong in the first half of 2027 and will prioritize the largest agencies or those with the greatest relocation impact. The plan would be the second large-scale public-sector relocation after 43 central government agencies moved to Sejong between 2012 and 2021.
