According to CoinDesk, the United States and the United Kingdom announced sanctions against the Russian cybercriminal group Trickbot. Trickbot has close ties to Russian intelligence, according to CoinDesk, and according to the U.S. Treasury Department, Trickbot's attacks are designed to meet "Russian state objectives," including attacks on the U.S. government. Trickbot has targeted hospitals and other medical facilities with ransomware attacks during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Chainalysis, Trickbot has made at least $724 million in cryptocurrency through its attacks, second only to North Korea’s Lazarus Group. The sanctioned members of the Trickbot group have all been added to the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons (SDN) list, which will also freeze certain assets and impose a travel ban.
