Odaily Planet Daily News Casa CTO Jameson Lopp defended the Bitcoin Lightning Network in an interview in response to community doubts.
More recently, the Lightning Network has come under fire again from insiders in the bitcoin community, with Fiatjaf, founder of decentralized social media protocol Nostr, describing it as "a bunch of ugly and complicated hacks."
Another criticism is that large numbers of users rely on custodial solutions such as Wallet of Satoshi to interact with Bitcoin, and while these solutions are convenient, there is also the risk that these projects may "abscond with money" at some point in the future .
To these doubts, Lopp acknowledged that the complexity of the Lightning Network has resulted in a convenience trade-off with custodial solutions. However, he noted that this actively developed system is far from complete, and part of the engineer's job is to address the remaining complexities.
"There's no question that the Lightning Network is complex," Lopp said. "Complexity means you have trade-offs. That's one of the reasons why a lot of people end up using custodial solutions. Custodial platforms have the ability to hide a lot of complexity, which is why they The reason for being able to get more users is because they provide a more user-friendly solution.”
“But on the other hand, we keep learning that this is an ecosystem that’s in active development, so it’s far from complete,” Lopp continued, “When you have complexity, part of the job as an engineer is to try to figure it out. Knowing how to abstract that away, what can be learned from these edge cases that arise because of complexity and how we write software, and come up with best practices for how to deal with them, ideally in as automated a fashion as possible.”
"So, that means it's challenging and we've got a long way ahead, but I see things moving in a good direction," he added. (The Block)
