Odaily Planet Daily News Kenyan police raided Worldcoin's offices in Nairobi on Saturday and confiscated machines that the police believed were collecting user data. The police took the data to the headquarters of the Criminal Investigation Bureau for analysis.
The raid was overseen by Kenya's data protection commissioner, Immaculate Kassait. Immaculate Kassait said Worldcoin parent company Tools for Humanity failed to reveal its true intentions when it registered. (Kahawatungu)
According to previous reports, on August 2, the Kenyan Ministry of the Interior announced that it had suspended Worldcoin operations. "The government is concerned about the ongoing activities of an organization calling itself 'WORLD COIN', which collects eyeball/iris data for citizen registration." The relevant financial, security and data protection services have launched investigations to identify the project legality and data protection.
Worldcoin has since confirmed that it has temporarily suspended its services in Kenya after receiving notice of the suspension. Worldcoin stated that it is working with the authorities to restore iris scanning in Kenya as soon as possible, will propose better registration measures and crowd control measures, and increase the description of privacy measures and commitments.
