Odaily Planet Daily News Researchers at San Diego State University have developed a fully automated fraud detection system GiveawayScamHunter. The system found that from June 2022 to June 2023, 87,617 accounts on Platform X (formerly Twitter) created 95,111 scam lists (List).
It is reported that the Twitter Lists function effectively organizes the fans that users follow, people they care about, tags and interests, etc., to help them focus on important things. Users can customize, organize and prioritize the tweets they see in their timeline. Users can add other users to lists without permission, and the only way to remove yourself from a list is to block the creator, which opens up opportunities for scammers.
According to a research paper published on Aug. 10, "more than 365 victims were targeted by the free cryptocurrency scam, resulting in an estimated $870,000 in financial losses," and the problem has yet to be fully resolved.
The team concluded that nearly 44 percent of spamming accounts were still active at the time of writing, even though it had reported the results and account information to Platform X. (The Block)
