Judge Edgardo Ramos of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York sentenced OneCoin lawyer Mark Scott to 10 years in prison for laundering millions of dollars through OneCoin. The lawyer was convicted of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering in November 2019 and is currently awaiting sentencing. Prosecutors asked for a minimum sentence of 17 years for Scott, while his legal team recommended just five years. He reportedly expressed sympathy for OneCoin’s victims before being sentenced. Scott's lawyers reportedly said they planned to apply for bail pending an appeal against the sentencing decision.
Scott worked with OneCoin to launder money under the guidance of “Crypto Queen” Ruja Ignatova. Ignatova, who co-founded the cryptocurrency company with Karl Sebastian Greenwood in 2014, remains at large at the time of this article’s publication, despite her involvement in the OneCoin initiative. In September 2023, Greenwood was sentenced to 20 years in prison on fraud and money laundering charges and ordered to pay $300 million in restitution to OneCoin victims. OneCoin’s former chief compliance officer Irinia Dilkinska pleaded guilty to two felonies in November 2023 and is scheduled to be sentenced in February this year. (Cointelegraph)
