The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is reviewing OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s internal communications as part of an investigation into whether the company’s investors were misled.
The regulator has been seeking internal records from current and former OpenAI executives and directors and issued subpoenas to OpenAI in December, according to people familiar with the matter. Some people familiar with the investigation said it was a predictable response to statements made by the former OpenAI board in its November statement (when directors said Altman "has been inconsistent in his communications").
The SEC did not identify any specific statements or communications from Altman as misleading, one of the people said. The investigation is ongoing, but its focus was not immediately known. (WSJ)
