Recently, cyber hackers have frequently launched attacks on public and private institutions in Hong Kong, stealing personal information through network intrusions. After some failed extortion attempts, they publicly killed the victims and auctioned off the information of thousands of citizens on the "dark web".
Recently, the Hong Kong Polytechnic and Luk Fook Jewellery were hacked, and about 450GB of files of the Hong Kong Polytechnic were posted on the dark web. Nearly 10,000 people have viewed the information; some hackers claimed online that there were 5 million Luk Fook members' information for sale. Both institutions have reported the incident to the police and the Privacy Commissioner's Office, and the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau of the police has taken over the investigation.
It is reported that a hacker recently posted on Telegram that Luk Fook's member information was sold for 25,000 USDT (about 195,000 Hong Kong dollars). The leaked information includes the members' names, dates of birth, addresses, ID numbers, emails, account passwords, mobile phone numbers and WeChat accounts, including the personal information of mainland and local customers.
