Federal regulators have reached a deal that allows them to launch an antitrust investigation into Microsoft, OpenAI and Nvidia’s dominance in the artificial intelligence industry, the strongest sign yet of escalating regulatory scrutiny of the powerful technology.
The Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission reached the deal this past week and are expected to be finalized in the coming days, according to people familiar with the matter.
Under the deal, the Justice Department will lead an investigation into whether Nvidia, the largest maker of artificial intelligence chips, has violated antitrust laws, the people said.
