Lawyers for Roman Sterlingov, founder of cryptocurrency mixing service provider Bitcoin Fog, have opposed a "long" prison sentence after he was convicted of money laundering charges.
In a filing with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia on August 15, Sterlingov's legal team did not appear to make a specific sentencing recommendation for prosecutors' proposal that he should serve 20 to 30 years in prison. The lawyer claimed that the government's suggestion was "unfounded" based on the verdicts in similar cases.
Judge Randolph Moss initially planned to hold a hearing on the previous verdict on August 21, but later said the court would hear arguments about the government's confiscation order. (Cointelegraph)
Earlier in March, Bitcoin Fog founder Roman Sterlingov was convicted by a federal court in Washington. He had previously helped launder tens of millions of dollars on a dark web market known for selling illegal drugs. Roman Sterlingov, 35, provided a mixing service that made it harder to find the source of proceeds from illegal activity, and Bitcoin Fog allegedly processed more than $400 million in untraceable transactions, including some from illegal markets.
