Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently described a long-term plan for Unreal Games and Fortnite that could eventually create the digital asset marketplace that Web3 gamers have been dreaming of since the advent of the metaverse.
In a recent interview with The Verge, Sweeney talked about the company’s upcoming Unreal Engine 6. Unreal is one of the most popular game engines in the world, used by developers around the world to create numerous AAA games.
Unreal Engine 5 is released in 2022, and game engines usually have a lifespan of between 7 and 10 years, so it’s unlikely that we’ll see Unreal Engine 6 before 2030. But according to Sweeney, Epic seems to have set ambitious goals for its flagship software. Sweeney also believes that the next generation of multiplayer game development will shift.
He said in the interview: "Our view is that players prefer games that can be played with friends, and they are willing to spend more money to buy digital props that they believe they will play for a long time." In addition, Sweeney believes that the Epic ecosystem needs to expand from the walled garden to the metaverse for players.
According to Epic Games, the future development path is well known to the cryptocurrency, blockchain and Web3 communities: the commoditization of digital assets.
Saxs Persson, executive vice president of Epic Games, said in an interview that the company's vision for future games is that no matter what platform players choose, they can maintain interoperability of games.
Analysis points out that on the surface, this will require blockchain technology to ensure trustless verification between systems without compromising corporate privacy. Epic Games has not yet commented on this. (Cointelegraph)
