A German national who was serving a $5 million home confinement bond in New York City on charges of being responsible for a $150 million cryptocurrency scam, with his partner and children as sureties, has become a fugitive. "There is a very active investigation going on to catch him. We will forfeit the bail," John Marzulli, a spokesman for the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's Office, said on Friday. Jicha failed to appear at a scheduled court date in Brooklyn federal court.
A prosecutor with the Brooklyn U.S. Attorney's Office told the judge at a hearing Thursday that was supposed to focus on pretrial issues in the case that Jicha was suspected of tampering with his ankle monitor on Oct. 3. After noticing that Jicha's ankle monitor was not working, pretrial services officers sent him an email asking him to come to their office the next day. Prosecutors told U.S. District Judge Orelia Merchant that Jicha did not show up. (CNBC)
