The People's Court of Wenchang City, Hainan Province, China, recently concluded a case of using cryptocurrency to trade personal information. The court investigation showed that in 2021, the defendant Han bought a total of 82,244,655 pieces of personal information of citizens from all over the country from others on QQ for 500 yuan, including 7,271 pieces of ID card photos, 30,689,810 pieces of car owner information, 1,069,935 pieces of bank citizen information, 33,862 pieces of express order transaction information, and 50,443,777 pieces of ID card, name, and mobile phone information, and saved them in Han's personal Baidu network disk for sale.
In March 2023, Han sold it through platforms such as QQ, WeChat, and Telegram, and cooperated with the courier Wu to obtain express transaction information, trading at a price of 1.5 yuan per piece in USDT, and making a profit of 770 yuan through a certain platform exchange. The defendant Wu received 380 yuan, and the other two purchasers have not yet paid.
The court eventually sentenced Han to one year and eight months in prison and a fine of 3,000 yuan for violating citizens' personal information. The co-defendant Wu was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for one year and four months, and fined 2,000 yuan.
