Oklahoma Senator Dusty Deevers has introduced legislation that would allow employees to receive their wages in Bitcoin and businesses to accept Bitcoin as a form of payment.
The Bitcoin Freedom Act, or SB325, seeks to establish a framework for the use of Bitcoin in Oklahoma, authorizing the use of the asset in transactions, wages, and investments while ensuring compliance with legal requirements.
For state employees who choose to be paid in Bitcoin, the legislation requires an agreement with the state to determine whether the value of Bitcoin is set at the beginning of the pay period or at the time of payment. Employees can choose to receive their compensation in Bitcoin, U.S. dollars, or both, and have the flexibility to modify their choice at the beginning of each pay period.
Deevers said the legislation is a necessary step to protect Oklahomans from inflation. The bill is expected to take effect on November 1, 2025, and includes provisions for tax implications and payment agreements.
