Indiana man sentenced to 20 years in prison for stealing $37 million in cryptocurrency

Odaily Planet Daily News Sioux Falls-U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced today that Chief U.S. Judge Roberto A. Lange has sentenced a man from Lebanon, Indiana, to conspiracy to commit wire fraud and conspiracy to launder money instruments. The sentencing took place on February 6, 2025. Evan Frederick Light, 22, was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison, followed by 3 years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a special assessment of $200 to the Federal Victims Fund and will be ordered to pay no less than $37 million in restitution. A hearing will be scheduled at a later date to determine the restitution. According to court documents, in February 2022, Light was involved in a cyber intrusion involving an investment holding company located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. During the cyber intrusion, Light stole customers' personally identifiable information ("PII") and then stole more than $37 million worth of cryptocurrency from nearly 600 victims. He acted in conjunction with one or more unidentified perpetrators.
