Odaily Planet Daily News U.S. SEC Commissioner Hester Peirce said the agency is closely monitoring cases against cryptocurrency companies, trying to set a new benchmark in regulating digital assets.
Peirce said in an interview on Tuesday: "In the past few years, enforcement cases have been used as a way to make regulatory policies; this is an atypical approach. We are trying to get back on the path of really using other tools to make policies."
She declined to say whether the SEC would completely abandon the lawsuit against Binance, saying that specific cases could not be discussed. She said the agency needs to "sort out" cases against cryptocurrency companies, but did not say whether other cryptocurrency cases would be suspended or abandoned. For example, the agency sued Coinbase Global Inc. in 2023, accusing it of operating an illegal exchange. She added: "We have to decide what to do next based on the specific circumstances of each case." (Bloomberg)
