Odaily Planet Daily News: The US Republican Party admitted that they felt pressured by President Trump’s tariff policy. Their Wall Street donors are feeling the heat, too, with some expressing their displeasure to key Republican lawmakers this weekend.
Trump is making clear he will not tolerate any restrictions on his power to impose tariffs. But shocked Republican donors want lawmakers to help convince the president that the tariffs are devastating the U.S. economy.
Trump was unhappy with the bill introduced by Sens. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa). His veto threat sent a message to any Republican senator considering supporting the bill: “Forget it.”
“I don’t think that bill has a future,” said Senate Republican leader John Thune.
Lawmakers did not mention specifics about conversations with donors, but their concerns grew significantly after three days of turbulence in U.S. stocks.
On the other hand, some Republican senators, especially Ted Cruz of Texas, have publicly criticized Trump's tariff policy, arguing that it is actually a tax on American consumers. (Axios)
