According to PANews, PayPal has launched a new peer-to-peer payment service called PayPal Links, aimed at merging messaging channels with payment pathways. The service, introduced on September 15, allows users to create personalized, one-time links for sending or requesting funds via text, private messages, or email.
Initially available to PayPal's 278 million U.S. customers, the service promises speed and simplicity. It is set to expand to other markets, including the UK and Italy, later this month. PayPal has also implemented changes to alleviate tax concerns, ensuring that transfers between friends and family via Links or Venmo do not trigger 1099-K reporting requirements, thus avoiding unnecessary tax forms for gifts, reimbursements, or shared expenses.
The PayPal Links service operates by allowing users to generate unique links through the PayPal app, which can be shared privately for specific transactions. These links can be sent via various communication methods, including text messages, private messages, emails, or chats, with options to add notes, emojis, or payment instructions.
Unclaimed links expire after 10 days, and users can send reminders or cancel payments or requests through the PayPal app before the link is claimed. Recipients complete or accept payments by clicking the link and using their PayPal account within the app, with funds immediately available upon acceptance.
PayPal is also planning to support cryptocurrency transfers, enabling users to transfer assets like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and PYUSD through the same links, regardless of whether the recipient holds a PayPal wallet, Venmo account, or external crypto address. This integration highlights PayPal's growing focus on digital assets, with its stablecoin PYUSD reaching a market value of $1.27 billion.
By embedding cryptocurrency into message-based payments, PayPal aims to enhance adoption and practicality in a domain where convenience often dictates usage. Diego Scotti, General Manager of PayPal's Consumer Business, views this launch as part of the company's mission to make money move as seamlessly as communication. Scotti stated, "Whether you're texting, messaging, or emailing, your funds can now follow your conversations. Combined with 'PayPal World,' this offers an unparalleled value proposition, making payments to friends and family easy and efficient, regardless of their location or app usage."
