Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to Paul Atkins, Chairman of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), requesting an investigation into the deletion of official text messages by former SEC Chairman Gary Gensler during his tenure. The SEC's Office of Internal Oversight (OIG) stated in a report in early September that the SEC during Gensler's tenure had issues with transparency and compliance. The report revealed that the SEC's Information Technology Division implemented an erroneous automated policy that resulted in the complete wiping of Gary Gensler's government-issued phone, along with the deletion of text messages from October 2022 to September 2023. Republican lawmakers criticized Gensler for having a double standard, stating that while in 2023 he filed lawsuits against multiple financial institutions for "recordkeeping failures" and collected over $400 million in fines, he failed to ensure his own institution's compliance record.
