Sam Altman's ex-boyfriend, the founder of OpenAI, was robbed at his home, losing $11 million in crypto assets.

According to police and sources, the San Francisco residence of investor Lachy Groom (ex-boyfriend of ChatGPT owner Sam Altman) was targeted in a home invasion robbery on Saturday night, with $11 million worth of crypto assets stolen. Armed robbers, posing as deliverymen carrying a white package, pulled out a gun after victim Joshua opened the door and identified himself. They bound the victim with duct tape, stole his cell phone and laptop, and emptied his crypto asset accounts. Police sources stated that the robbers stole $11 million worth of Ethereum and Bitcoin, which is believed to be a targeted robbery by an organized crime group. Sources revealed that the attackers bound and tortured the victim, beating him while playing external sounds through his cell phone speakerphone, including someone reading out his personal information. They then emptied his crypto wallet within approximately 90 minutes. Police arrived at the scene at 6:45 p.m. and found the victim with minor injuries, including bruises. The homeowner, Lachy Groom (31), is a venture capitalist who had a past relationship with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (40). Property records show that Groom purchased the property from Altman's brother in 2021 for $1.8 million. According to the New York Post, Joshua, a tech investor, lived in the residence with Groom. Prominent San Francisco tech investor Garry Tan shared surveillance footage on the X platform and appealed to the public for assistance in locating the suspect. Tan stated that self-managing crypto assets seems like a good idea, but it's not always the case, and recommends that storing long-term assets in Vaults (such as Coinbase or elsewhere) is the safest option.
