White House Press Secretary Janet Levitt said Wednesday that despite concerns that seizing sanctioned oil tankers could escalate tensions with Russia, President Trump is “not afraid” to continue holding them. “Trump will pursue policies that are in the best interests of the United States,” she told reporters at a press conference. “That means imposing an embargo on all ‘shadow fleets’ illegally transporting oil.” Levitt’s remarks came hours after the U.S. military seized two oil tankers, including one flying the Russian flag, which it had been tracking for more than two weeks. She downplayed the risk of the move escalating tensions with Russia, arguing that Trump maintains a good relationship with President Putin.
