Lebanon explosion injures 4,000, Taiwanese manufacturer denies any involvement, can Apple phones also be remotely detonated?

On September 17, 2024, multiple BB Call devices, used by members of the Lebanese Hezbollah, exploded simultaneously across Lebanon. Allegations Against Israel

Hezbollah has accused Israel of orchestrating the explosions. According to reports, Hezbollah had ordered BB Call devices, manufactured in Taiwan, and Israel allegedly tampered with these devices before they reached Lebanon. The claim suggests that Israel implanted explosives in the devices and set up a mechanism for remote detonation.

Taiwanese Manufacturer’s Response

Taiwan's Gold Apollo, a company reportedly linked to the devices, has denied any involvement. Chairman Hsu Ching-kuang clarified that the devices in question were produced by a foreign company, BAC, which Gold Apollo merely licensed to use its brand. Gold Apollo asserts that it does not handle the design or production of the devices.

The pager display is manufactured by Golden Apollo Corporation of Taiwan.

Gold Apollo emphasised that BAC was responsible for manufacturing the devices, and the company only provided branding under a licensing agreement. The statement stressed that Gold Apollo had no role in the production or tampering of the devices and plans to pursue legal action against any false allegations.

Gold Apollo, a Taiwanese company with a capital of NT$100 million, specialises in electronic components and telecommunication equipment. The company has been involved in wireless communication systems for over 20 years, with all its products developed and manufactured in Taiwan. The company’s products are internationally certified and comply with various safety standards.

This incident raises concerns about the security of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN), which involve connecting physical devices through blockchain or other decentralised technologies. Potential risks include both cyber and physical attacks.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden commented on the situation, noting that such incidents make the world less secure. He highlighted the disturbing precedent set by the attack, suggesting that similar threats could target other devices in the future. Snowden called for enhanced security measures and continuous risk management to prevent potential attacks.
