On the second day of the Bitcoin Conference 2022 in Miami, as colorful as we've come to expect, PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel offered up his Bitcoin "enemies list," while Mexico's third richest man Ricardo Salinas revealed that 60% of his portfolio is Bitcoin.
Thiel, one of the keynote speakers, took to the Satoshi stage at the conference in the early afternoon to throw a wad of $100 bills into the crowd in an attempt to explain the difference between cryptocurrencies and government-backed fiat currencies, Then the speech began.
As the crowd quickly reached for their money, Thiel joked: “I thought you guys were supposed to be bitcoin maximalists.”
He then delivered a rousing pro-Bitcoin speech, predicting that Bitcoin would rise 100-fold from today's price and that traditional financial markets would eventually collapse.
“Central banks are going bankrupt. We are at the end of the fiat currency system.”
Thiel also has a list of his enemies, calling legendary Berkshire Hathaway investor Warren Buffett "enemy number one." Thiel called Buffett a “sociopathic old man” — apparently taking offense at the Berkshire Hathaway CEO’s criticism of Bitcoin.
Thiel’s list also included JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon and BlackRock CEO Larry Fink, a group of billionaires Thiel denounced for running “elder rule” — a society ruled by the elderly, against cryptocurrencies.
Later in the day, Mexican billionaire Ricardo Salinas used his 15 minutes on the main stage to focus on bonds, announcing that he now has 60% of his entire liquid portfolio invested in Bitcoin The 10% he held in December 2020 has grown significantly.
“I have absolutely no bonds of any kind... I have 60% bitcoin and bitcoin stocks, and 40% hard asset stocks like oil, gas and gold mining companies.”
Salinas, who has an estimated net worth of about $12.8 billion, was an early investor in bitcoin. In an interview with Cointelegraph, Salinas said he bought his first bitcoin in 2013, when the average price of bitcoin was around $200.
Earlier in the day, former Blockstream Chief Strategy Officer Samson Mow announced that two new jurisdictions will adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. The Caribbean island of Roatan and the Portuguese autonomous region of Madeira have confirmed that they will adopt bitcoin as legal tender. Mexico is also reportedly considering such a move.
El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele was scheduled to speak Thursday from the penultimate position, however, Bitcoin Congress officially announced his withdrawal on Twitter on April 7, calling it an “unforeseen circumstance.” The country is currently under a state of emergency due to escalating gang violence.
Day three of BitcoinCon 2022 will feature more high-profile guest speakers, including a fireside chat from renowned psychologist Jordan Peterson, a keynote from legendary investor Mike Novogratz, and a presentation from Eric Weinstein, managing director of Thiel Capital.
