▌Nigeria SEC plans to allow licensed digital exchanges to issue tokens, with a regulatory incubation period of one year

Abdulkadir Abbas, director of securities and investment services of the Nigerian Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), said that the Nigerian SEC is considering allowing token issuance on licensed digital exchanges, which consist of equity, debt, property, but not asset backing in cryptocurrencies. The Nigerian SEC, which aims to register fintech firms as digital sub-brokers, crowdfunding intermediaries, robo-advisors, fund managers and token issuers, will not register cryptocurrency exchanges until an agreement is reached on standards with the central bank. Abbas said that interested digital exchanges will go through a year of regulatory incubation, during which they will only offer skeleton services supervised by the SEC to study their mode of operation and suitability for providing services in the country. At the same time, Abbas said, at the 10th month of the incubation period, it will be able to decide whether to register the company, extend its incubation period or ask the company to cease operations.
