In a proactive response to mounting concerns over the rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, tech giants Google and OpenAI, along with support from AI startup Anthropic and Microsoft, have jointly established the Frontier Model Forum.
This coalition aims to ensure the safety and accountability of AI models by pooling their collective expertise and setting industry benchmarks.
Eligibility for membership in the forum is open to organizations engaged in developing and deploying frontier models.
Anna Makanju, Vice President of Global Affairs at OpenAI, highlighted the urgency of this endeavor, expressing the forum's readiness to swiftly advance AI safety.
They said:
"It is vital that AI companies–especially those working on the most powerful models–align on common ground and advance thoughtful and adaptable safety practices to ensure powerful AI tools have the broadest benefit possible."
The Frontier Model Forum plans to create an advisory board in the coming months to assess priorities and develop a charter, governance system, and funding for effective leadership.
Microsoft President Brad Smith emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating that it unites the tech sector in advancing AI responsibly and addressing challenges for the benefit of humanity:
"This initiative is a vital step to bring the tech sector together in advancing AI responsibly and tackling the challenges so that it benefits all of humanity."
