Grab (GRAB) and stablecoin operator Circle have unveiled plans for a pilot programme introducing a Web3 wallet within the Grab superapp.
The announcement, made on 14 September, introduces the "Grab Web3 Wallet," which will be accessible to Grab users in Singapore.
This wallet will enable users of the ride-hailing, food delivery, and digital payment platform to utilise vouchers in non-fungible token (NFT) format, earn rewards, and collect digital assets.
The pilot programme's first stage is set to coincide with the Singapore Grand Prix on 17 September.
This integration leverages Circle's newly launched Web3 services platform within the Grab app to facilitate traditional companies' adoption of stablecoins, digital assets, and smart contracts.
Eligible Grab app users can now create blockchain-enabled wallets, offering them the ability to earn rewards, collect digital assets, and utilise NFT vouchers.
As a special promotion, the Grab Web3 Wallet will offer SG Pitstop Pack NFT vouchers redeemable at popular stores in Singapore, aligning with the upcoming F1 Singapore Grand Prix event.
This development follows a recent industry buzz generated when a Web3 tab, featuring an integrated cryptocurrency wallet, appeared on the Grab app's interface on 7 September.
Circle's co-founder and CEO, Jeremy Allaire, expressed his enthusiasm on social media, highlighting the trend of major web2 companies embracing blockchain technology.
Co-founder and CEO of Circle Jeremy Allaire said:
"Piloting our technology with Grab’s customers brings us closer to realising the full potential of responsible digital assets innovation."
And at TOKEN2049 in Singapore, he added:
"I think it's gonna be very easy for us to imagine a world next year where we can take a billion users and have access to Web3, and therefore have access to transacting stablecoins."
