Non-fungible token company Bookblocks.io has partnered with a New York-based organization to help Afghan women gain access to education during the Taliban takeover.
Bookblocks.io announced that it will issue a non-fungible token (NFT) on October 5, with proceeds going to Women for Afghan Women, an organization that helps women in Afghanistan and the United States gain access to education and vocational training. Inspired by American author Louisa May Alcott, the piece depicts half a woman's face, hidden by a butterfly wing, with the inscription "For a determined woman, anything is possible."
When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in the 1990s, they banned education for nearly all women and girls. History has effectively repeated itself after the Islamist extremist group seized control of the government after the withdrawal of U.S. troops last month and has so far only advised men and boys to go back to school. The country's deputy education minister, Zabihullah Mujahid, had veiled that the Taliban planned to educate women and girls "as soon as possible".
Naheed Samadi Bahram, U.S. country director for Women for Afghan Women, said: "This generation has grown up with hope, dreaming of their future through educational opportunities. We are committed to supporting Afghan women and girls in Afghanistan and Afghans arriving in the United States refugee services."
According to Bookblocks.io, 100% of the funds raised from the sale of the NFT will be donated to Women for Afghan Women, with the remaining 5% going to each subsequent sale. The company plans to mint 2,200 NFTs to honor the 2.2 million girls in Afghanistan who are currently unable to attend school. The starting price is 0.025 ETH, which is around $75.54 at the time of writing.
Risking death, beatings and imprisonment, Afghan women continue to protest the Taliban's position that they are not allowed to go to school through social media messages and in-person demonstrations. Code to Inspire, a school that aims to teach Afghan girls coding and robotics, is continuing to offer online classes as the situation develops.
