On March 30, Netflix’s new crypto documentary Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King was released amid much fanfare. The documentary is based on the mysterious death of the founder of defunct cryptocurrency exchange QuadrigaCX.
The founder of the cryptocurrency exchange allegedly died while en route to India. Along with that, he took the whereabouts of the keys to an encrypted wallet holding $250 million worth of cryptocurrency.
The mysterious disappearance/death of the QuadrigaCX founder has sparked unofficial investigations and numerous conspiracy theories. Netflix's investigative documentary aims to unravel some of the mysteries surrounding the high-profile encryption case, which baffles many even today.
There already seems to be a lot of interest in the release of this crypto-fraud documentary inspired by the "DON 'TF*CK WITH CATS"-esque investigative thriller. One Twitter user wrote:
"Watched it at the gym tonight. Only watched half of it, but already insane: the most infuriating thing is pretending to die from Crohn's disease, really?! You don't need an MD to tell you about Crohn's disease Rarely results in death!"
Another netizen expressed a similar sentiment:
"What a crazy story. Dig that grave!"
One user who allegedly used QudrigaCX said he sniffed out suspicious activity early on and withdrew his funds just in time. After watching the documentary, he wrote:
“A lot of my cryptocurrencies are on that exchange. But one day, I felt something weird about how the transactions were being handled. After setting up the Bloomberg system for AIMCO, I got a good feel for how these exchanges should work. That's when I took all the coins out."
While the investigative documentary is captivating and understandable to anyone without any prior knowledge of crypto, many in the crypto community who followed the story closely or were affected by the exchange’s bankruptcy found it rewarding.
Coin card founder and CEO Mike Oltoff said many of his friends made guest appearances on the documentary, including himself.
"It was weird to see a group of my friends in a documentary, but they all did a great job! Funny that I also cameoed in the background of one of the videos about Patryn in this documentary."
The conspiracy theory that the founder faked his own death to defraud clients of millions of dollars in cryptocurrency resonated with most viewers.
