On Tuesday, the Polygon network released its "Green Manifesto: Smart Contracts with the Planet," announcing its commitment to be carbon neutral and climate positive this year. They've also pledged $20 million to offset their carbon footprint and buy additional credits to eventually go carbon negative.

Part of the plan for this Ethereum scaling solution for a more sustainable future includes providing resources to ecosystem partners who also want to offset their carbon footprint. In addition, they hope to promote donations from non-governmental organizations to fight climate change.
According to the company, the Green Manifesto puts freedom "at the center of the ethos of Web3," and climate change is the biggest threat to that freedom. Going carbon neutral means every NFT minting, token bridging or DeFi transaction made on Polygon will be counted and its environmental impact will be offset. Their long-term vision is for the ecosystem to be the first blockchain it calls climate positive.
Currently, Polygon is partnering with KlimaDAO, a developer organization that provides on-chain carbon offset technology, and Offsetra, which provides Polygon with an analytical tool for measuring the carbon intensity of the network. Management strategies can be better formed by analyzing emissions from staking node hardware or bridging activity, and the energy consumption of interacting with the Ethereum mainnet.
Polygon also published an emissions analysis that found that 99% of Polygon’s emissions were caused by checkpointing and bridging activities involving transactions on the Ethereum mainnet. Polygon pointed out that from February 2021 to February 2022, the total network emissions will be 90,645 tons of carbon dioxide, which is lower than that of companies such as Microsoft and Deloitte.
Polygon recently raised $450 million from Sequoia and other large blockchain VC funds to expand its scalable solutions, including Polygon PoS, Polygon Edge, and Polygon Avail. Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal said these scalability and sustainability initiatives are part of their overall strategy to promote mainstream adoption of Web3 applications.
