Star Trek producer Gene Roddenberry's signature boldly goes where NFTs have never gone before - the ciphers of life itself.
Back in 1965, Roddenberry signed a contract with Lucille Ball's production company, Desilu Productions, to finance Star Trek. Thirty years after the sci-fi legend's death, on November 30, the signature was transformed into a non-homogeneous version (NFT) and embedded in the DNA code of a living bacterial cell.
Roddenberry Entertainment describes it as the first-ever "Living Eco-NFT" and a "true intersection of science and sci-fi." The work will replicate and grow as the organism's cells divide.
"As long as the bacteria are alive, the cells can multiply, creating more than a billion copies of this ecological NFT overnight."
It will be on display in Miami during Art Basel 2021 as a work of art, titled "El Primero" (Spanish for "the first").
Emmy Award-winning director Agustin Fernandez, CEO of Rational Vaccines, collaborated on the piece. "Storing information in DNA represents a whole new possibility in terms of data archiving," he said.
"It provides sustainable, environmentally friendly storage at a much greater capacity than anything currently on the market."
Backed by Metaplex Studios, these NFTs run on the Solana blockchain (SOL).
Stephen Hess, interim CEO of Metaplex Studios, said: “The Solana blockchain provides a very energy-efficient platform for NFT creators.”
Dr. Paul Predki was responsible for encoding the NFT's digital data into a DNA sequence, which was then stored in a naturally self-replicating bacterial cell.
Star Trek is no stranger to collectibles or NFTs. In July 2020, "Star Trek" fans purchased 125,000 NFT trading cards printed with "Captain Kirk" William Shatner (William Shatner) on the WAX blockchain. In June 2020, Shatner spoke about NFTs in an interview with Cointelegraph Magazine: “There’s a revolution coming, not just on the streets, but on Ethereum. It’s an intellectual revolution.”
