Twitter Blue launches NFT avatar feature for iOS users

On Thursday afternoon, Twitter announced that it would roll out iOS support for non-fungible tokens (NFTs). So far, the feature is only available to paid users of Twitter Blue on iOS, which costs $2.99 a month for a Twitter Blue subscription. According to a tutorial video, users can connect their wallets, including Coinbase Wallet, Rainbow, MetaMask, Trust Wallet, Argent or Ledger Live, and set the NFT in the wallet as their profile picture, which only takes a few seconds.

Users can also learn more about each other's NFT avatars, such as their owners, creators, series descriptions, and authenticity verification on third-party platforms like OpenSea. According to Twitter, the platform does not maintain a constant connection with users' crypto wallets. However, the company stores users’ public wallet addresses to ensure it continues to hold NFT avatars. While it can only be set via Twitter Blue on iOS, the NFT avatar will be visible on all platforms.

The development of this feature is still in its early stages. Twitter currently only supports static images, such as JPEG and PNG files, minted on the Ethereum blockchain, including the ERC-721 and ERC-1155 token standards. However, if a user sells or transfers an NFT, it is still set as a personal avatar, and no information about its ownership will be displayed when it is clicked.

But any excess enthusiasm is short-lived. According to Twitter user and blockchain enthusiast @HollanderAdam, the feature appears to work for any NFT in personal collections, not just those certified collections. In other words, an internet stranger can simply right-click, save any NFT from a Twitter avatar, mint it, and use it as their own avatar.
