Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI with Sam Altman in 2015, has reignited his legal battle against the organization. Musk initially sued OpenAI in February, alleging that it had abandoned its nonprofit origins. Although he temporarily withdrew the lawsuit after OpenAI published a blog post including some of his private communications, Musk has now filed a new legal action.
Musk's Allegations
In his latest legal filing, Musk accuses Altman of misleading him into supporting OpenAI under the pretense of it being a nonprofit organization. Musk asserts that he invested significant time, money, and effort into recruiting for OpenAI, only for Altman to shift the organization towards a for-profit model.
OpenAI's Defense
OpenAI's March blog post included emails suggesting that Musk was aware of, and even endorsed, this strategic pivot. The post emphasized that both Musk and Altman recognized the necessity of adopting a for-profit model to attract the resources required for developing advanced AI technologies.
Musk's Criticism of OpenAI
Despite the past communications, Musk has become a vocal critic of OpenAI. In 2023, he labeled it a "closed source, maximum-profit company effectively controlled by Microsoft" on his social media platform, X. This criticism reflects Musk's disillusionment with the direction OpenAI has taken since its inception.
In a related development, X is reportedly under investigation by Irish regulators over allegations that user data might have been used to train Musk's AI chatbot, Grok. This investigation adds another layer of complexity to Musk's ongoing disputes and highlights the broader concerns around data privacy and AI development.
