I am definitely not the biggest supporter of WorldCoin and have been an outspoken critic of it. However, their recent developments have been quite interesting.
Worldcoin has just launched their layer 2 (L2), called World Chain:
Built on the Optimistic Hyperchain ecosystem
Permissionless and open source
Secured by Ethereum
Using the high-performance Reth Ethereum client developed by Paradigm
Using ETH as gas (users can also choose to pay fees in $WLD)
Worldchain is labeled a “Blockchain designed for real humans”.
What does this mean in practice?
World Chain has launched Human-First Blockspace (PBH), an exciting concept that will be more widely used in other chains.
Since launch, over 7 million verified users have obtained a Global ID by scanning their iris.
Through a partnership with FlashBots, PHB aims to give blockspace priority to users with a World ID.
Verified users can execute with “top of the block” priority, greatly improving the user experience. In the future, this may develop into a separate fee market mechanism for verified transactions. Additionally, PBH protects users from MEV attacks and reduces the fees for including transactions in blocks.
While robots, AI, and highly specialized companies dominate on-chain transactions, Worldchain ensures that verified humans have priority when interacting on-chain.
To implement PHB, World Chain will create a custom block generator that identifies blocks proposed by World ID holders, and prioritizes them over all other transactions. The choice to not implement this logic in the sequencer (execution client) was made to ensure a more modular approach with better liveness guarantees, having the block generators run in conjunction with the sequencer.
In addition, since the unverified address pays the fee, the verified person will also receive the gas subsidy for the transaction.
In the future, World Chain also plans to give verified humans priority in the error-proofing system.
Integration into the super chain makes World Chain compatible with all OP chains and Ethereum.
PHB is an interesting evolution in an era where AI agents and robots are becoming increasingly sophisticated and autonomous. By prioritizing human interaction, World Chain creates a new niche in the blockchain.
This new design could unlock new and exciting use cases:
Signing transactions on Worldchain as proof of identity
Integrating with Web2 services that require identity confirmation
Creating Proof of Humanity systems
While Worldcoin was considered a dystopian project, World Chain has adopted an open-source and permissionless architecture, perhaps to cater to more privacy-conscious users who would otherwise opt out.
