FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football, has launched a limited edition of NFTs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The FIFA World Cup is held every four years and is one of the most-watched sporting events in the world. The 2022 Qatar World Cup concluded after an extremely dramatic and exciting final. The next edition will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Meanwhile, the International Football Association (FIFA) has announced the launch of a brand-new digital collectibles series. The rarest collectible within this series will grant its owner the opportunity to watch the final match of the 2026 World Cup.
Limited Edition Digital Collectibles
In its latest press release, FIFA announced the upcoming launch of limited digital collectibles later this week. These NFTs will grant holders a special privilege, offering them the opportunity to watch the final match of the 2026 World Cup.
In the first release, 100 digital collectibles will be offered, showcasing the rarest items and providing an opportunity to win tickets for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals. Additionally, they will be released on the Polygon network, and 900 other digital collectibles will be available on the OpenSea platform.
FIFA initially collaborated with Algorand, and the first NFT was minted on that blockchain. However, the plan now is to move the upcoming second phase of the series to Polygon. All future releases of FIFA's digital collectibles will also be utilizing Polygon.
Collaboration with Modex
FIFA has also announced a collaborative project where blockchain company Modex will take over the 'strategic management of its digital collectibles platform.
In response to this, Modex CEO Francesco Abbate stated in a release,
"Digital collectibles increase the ways in which fans can interact with their favourite players, teams, and the game they love, and we’re honoured to support FIFA in realising this goal."
Numerous companies in the encryption industry have already established partnerships with professional football teams. For example, the exchange platform OKX has entered into a sponsorship agreement with Manchester City Football Club. Additionally, the French fantasy sports gaming company Sorare has a partnership with the English Premier League.
