At the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland, Filecoin Foundation President Marta Belcher revealed the successful completion of a groundbreaking demonstration showcasing the use of decentralized technologies in space communications. The Filecoin Foundation collaborated with aerospace giant Lockheed Martin for nearly three years to achieve this milestone.

Decentralized Networking Vision Realized

Belcher explained that the demonstration involved sending files from Earth to outer space and back through an InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) implementation designed for space communications. The project's original vision was to enable long-distance networking in space, aligning with the InterPlanetary File System's purpose. Belcher expressed satisfaction in realizing this vision and highlighted the efficiency of decentralized systems in space.

Challenges of Centralized Systems in Space

Belcher contrasted centralized systems with decentralized ones, emphasizing that while centralized systems may not face issues on Earth, they encounter delays in space. The multisecond or multiminute delays on the moon or Mars, respectively, result from the need to transmit files all the way from Earth to space. Belcher argued that this model is impractical for space communication.

Efficiency and Verifiability of Decentralized Systems

In contrast, a decentralized system's content identification system allows file access from the nearest satellite, eliminating the need to traverse vast distances. Belcher highlighted the efficiency gained by pulling files from the closest location in space. Additionally, the IPFS ensures data verifiability through cryptographic verification, offering assurance that transmitted data remains untampered.

Addressing Challenges: Radiation and Space Debris

Belcher addressed challenges associated with centralized architecture, such as radiation and space debris. Storing files in space becomes challenging due to factors like radiation, which could corrupt files. The decentralized protocol, according to Belcher, resolves this issue by allowing files to be pulled from various locations, ensuring redundancy and integrity.
