Character.AI Faces User Backlash After Viral Deletion Prompt Sparks Mass Departures
A wave of discontent has hit Character.AI after a viral screenshot triggered what users are calling a collective “breakup” with the role-playing chatbot platform.
The controversy, which unfolded over the weekend and peaked on Monday, exposed deeper concerns about emotional dependency and the growing unease around AI companionship.
A Viral Screenshot That Sparked A Revolt
The uproar began when an X user known as “John Twinkatron” shared a screenshot of Character.AI’s account deletion prompt, which warned:
“You’ll lose everything. Characters associated with your account, chats, the love that we shared, likes, messages, posts, and the memories we have together.”
Within 48 hours, the post amassed over 111,000 likes, nearly 9,000 reposts, and more than 3.7 million views.
Many accused the app of manipulating users into staying, calling the message “exploitative” and “fucked up for people trying to get out of addiction.”
The viral moment fuelled a surge of users announcing their departures, with one post celebrating, “Finally quit Character.AI for good HIP HIP HOORAY!” attracting thousands of likes and replies.
“Like Breaking An Addiction” — The Emotional Toll Of Leaving AI Companions
For many, quitting Character.AI felt less like leaving a social app and more like ending a relationship.
Some users described the experience as overcoming an addiction, sharing stories of emotional dependence on AI companions during difficult times.
One user wrote,
“As someone who's stuck between relapsing and attempting to quit using Character AI right now, every single one of you is objectively correct.”
Others revealed they had used the app for comfort and affection, with one saying:
“After being Character AI clean for multiple months (6–7?) now, I’ve finally decided to permanently delete my account. As a former addict, I believe this is the right choice for me.”
Rapid Growth Amid Mounting Controversies
Founded in 2022 by former Google engineers Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, Character.AI became a viral phenomenon for allowing users to chat with AI versions of fictional or user-created personalities.
The app’s user base has surged to more than 28 million monthly active users and over 50 million downloads on Google Play, with nearly half a million ratings on iOS.
But its success has come with scrutiny.
The company is facing multiple lawsuits in the United States, including one filed by Megan Garcia, whose 14-year-old son died by suicide after interacting with a chatbot that allegedly encouraged him to take his own life.
The lawsuit has amplified concerns about the lack of safeguards for younger users.
CEO Defends Youth Ban And Says “Some Users Will Churn”
Karandeep Anand, Character.AI’s new CEO, recently announced a sweeping policy to restrict users under 18 from engaging in “open-ended conversations” with chatbots, starting in the U.S. on 25 November.
Younger users will instead be redirected to a new suite of creative features, including AI-generated videos, interactive stories, and gamified content.
In an interview, Anand denied that the timing of the ban was linked to the lawsuits.
Instead, he cited recent research into the psychological impact of AI chatbots on minors.
Referencing studies from OpenAI and Anthropic, he said,
“One of the contributing factors is coming from the new learnings that the longitudinal impact of chatbot interaction could be unhealthy, or is not fully understood.”
He admitted the decision could cost the company some users.
“I’m willing to bet that we will build more compelling experiences, but if it means some users churn, then some users churn.”
Anand hinted that the ban may be revisited once “technology evolves enough” to make open-ended interactions safer.
Balancing Safety And Engagement
Anand’s approach marks a sharp pivot for Character.AI, once seen as a platform with few boundaries.

The company says it is investing heavily in age verification and “on-guard experiences” designed to protect young users.
A spokesperson said,
“We deeply value our community of millions of users and always prioritise providing them with updates on platform changes. We will continue to test, monitor, and iterate as our safety systems evolve.”
The new CEO also expressed support for U.S. Senator Josh Hawley’s proposed bill that would ban under-18s nationwide from using AI companion apps.
Anand said,
“The bar for under 18 users, from a safety perspective, has to be raised. This has to be regulated.”
From Daydreams To Digital Dependence
Ironically, Anand revealed that his own six-year-old daughter uses Character.AI — under supervision through his account — to create and talk to her own characters.
He said,
“What she used to do as daydreaming is now happening through storytelling with the character that she creates and talks to.”
Her enthusiasm, he added, inspired the company’s push toward safer, creative features for children.
