Starting January 29, 2024, Google will implement updated advertising policies for the cryptocurrency industry. These updates are not limited to the United States; different regions have specific regulations.
Taking Taiwan as an example, advertisers will need authorization from Taiwan's Financial Supervisory Commission to place advertisements.
Since June 2018, Google has banned all cryptocurrency advertisements. However, by June 2021, Google had eased the advertising restrictions. They announced that starting in August 2021, advertisers offering cryptocurrency exchanges and wallet services targeting the United States could promote their products and services as long as they complied with the regulations. However, advertisements for ICOs (Initial Coin Offerings) and DeFi (Decentralized Finance) were still prohibited.
Must Comply with Local Regulations
Based on the latest policy, if advertisers want to promote cryptocurrency transactions, complex speculative financial products (such as contracts for difference, forex trading, financial spread betting, and similar products), as well as software or hardware wallets through Google Ads, they must undergo Google certification. To obtain this certification, the products offered by the advertisers, the web pages targeted by the ads, and the ads themselves must all comply with local advertising regulations.
Taiwan's Rules
Google allows the promotion of complex speculative financial products related to cryptocurrency in Taiwan, on the condition that advertisers first obtain formal authorisation from the Securities and Futures Bureau of the Financial Supervisory Commission of Taiwan. This means that only advertisers recognized by the Securities and Futures Bureau are eligible to promote these financial products on Google's platform in Taiwan.
Furthermore, advertisers must also comply with other relevant local laws in Taiwan. This includes limitations on the use of leverage and the requirement to provide potential investors with risk warnings.
