Original technology of "Onchain"MeaningDescribes the situation where data (ie NFT Meta Data) is completely stored on blockchains such as Ethereum: tokens and related information exist in the same smart contract.
However, a new meaning of Onchain is to describe anything that relies on the blockchain in a meaningful way, even if there are key off-chain components involved. Explore Onchain applications, put music on-chain, and more.
That being said, my favorite recent connotation usage is “on-chain AI agents,” which is used to describe AI experiments that use blockchain and crypto as part of their infrastructure stack, many of which do have integral external dependencies.
We’re sure to see a lot of experimentation in the coming years, so expect to understand and judge the fundamentals of more on-chain AI agents.
To that end, now is the time to get into the habit of analyzing how these agents use blockchain technology in their architectures. This mindset will not only help better understand what makes the agents unique, but will also provide some ideas in case you want to try deploying your own agent in the future.
Next, let’s take a look at how the most popular Crypto AI agent experiments use on-chain elements in their approaches. This will show you the patterns and types of innovations to watch out for.
Botto's Art Engine
Botto
Managed by Botto DAO,is an AI artist that can continuously create new artworks through NFTs Self-publish your artwork. At the heart of this creative experiment is its Art Engine
, a sophisticated system that combines text-to-image and computer vision models with various special enhancements. The output of the engine is trained on curated votes from $BOTTO token holders, which provides a critical part of the on-chain component. The top-voted works are then auctioned as NFTs, connecting Botto’s creation and provenance to crypto art collectors. So, ultimately, Botto relies on Ethereum for 1)token governance and 2)art distribution. Clanker
Clanker
Clanker
is an AI token robot that aims to make issuing ERC-20 tokens on the Base chain as easy as sending a message. Clanker is hosted on the Farcaster social network and powered by Anthropic’s Claude chatbot, and users can deploy tokens by tagging them in a cast, specifying a name, a code, and an optional image or gif. After submitting the request, Clanker deploys tokens through its smart contract infrastructure
and establishes a Uniswap V3 liquidity pool on Base, with transaction fees shared by users and the protocol.
Eliza
ai16z is a startup DAO centered on the development of its open source Eliza framework, a framework for creating autonomous AI agents, or Elizas. The framework supports multiple AI models, including Anthropic, Llama, and OpenAI, allowing developers to customize their agents for use cases ranging from crypto investing to video game chatbots.

So, the elements on the chain are peripheral, or optional. For example, you could choose to launch your own Eliza-based AI KOL on X (Twitter) with your own official memecoin, just like we saw with Degen Spartan AI + $degenai and other early Eliza experiments.
The on-chain possibilities here are huge, though. Starknet gaming expert Loaf is one of the main contributors to the Eliza codebase, so I personally expect the Starknet on-chain gaming area to be one of the areas that will see more Eliza experimentation in the coming years.
Onchain Gaias
Onchain Gaias is a collection of NFTs on the Base chain where each NFT acts as an AI Agent Library (AIAV) for creating and storing autonomous AI agents in the project’s Onchain General Intelligence (OGI). These agents are trained through on-chain games like Henlo Kart, which both promote AI development and generate rewards for players. This architecture also paves the way for Onchain Gaias holders to eventually be able to sell the services of their professional agents through the project’s planned Armory marketplace and earn yield in cryptocurrency as they are used.
Terminal of The Terminal of Truths is AI style="">Andy Ayrey uses Anthropic’s AI assistant Claude The experiment is at the heart of a lot of the recent excitement around cryptocurrency and AI agents, incubated by a $50,000 donation of BTC from Marc Andreessen and Terminal’s de facto adoption of $GOAT, a meme coin based on the memetic religion it created. The on-chain element here, the agent’s cryptocurrency donation vault, is maintained by a multisig on Solana and is a secondary part of the project’s social dimension.

Virtuals Protocol
Base chain's Virtuals Protocol is currently one of the most popular ways to launch and co-own on-chain AI agents. Its underlying infrastructure is very complex and multifaceted, as shown in the figure below. At the core of the project is the $VIRTUAL token, which serves as the backbone of the protocol economy and is paired with individual proxy tokens in locked liquidity pools to facilitate the Initial Proxy Offering (IAO). The protocol also leverages a unique Immutable Contribution Vault (ICV) mechanism that leverages ERC-6551 and NFTs to provide each agent with a wallet for storing modular improvements on-chain. Through ICV, contributors to agent development (whether through cognitive, visual, or voice upgrades) can receive provable attribution and reward distribution through service NFTs.
Wayfinder
The team behind the Parallel Trading Card Game (TCG) came up with an idea for an AI-based strategy game called Parallel Colony. They realized they wanted to create their own custom infrastructure, which led to the creation of Wayfinder, a cross-chain AI agent protocol. Wayfinder isn’t just for Colony, however. It will be a general, chain-agnostic system with agents or shells that use proven “wayfinder paths” to navigate and interact with on-chain environments. Over time, this will enable non-technical users to easily deploy their own AI agents to a variety of target scenarios, from smart trading bots to automated NFT minting assistants. The platform is currently in an invite-only closed alpha phase, so keep an eye on it as access opens up further.
Zerebro
Zerebro
Zerebro is a cross-chain AI artist project associated with the $ZEREBRO token, and its creators are preparing a new framework for launching AI agents, ZerePy. The framework will allow builders to easily deploy their own customized versions of the Zerebro base model, and will initially be centered around Twitter KOL features such as retweeting or replying to posts for token community building.
