MetaMask Unveils New Roadmap
MetaMask is set to expand its support to Bitcoin and Solana while working toward eliminating gas fees as part of its 2025 roadmap.
Solana integration will launch in May, making it the first non-Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) chain supported, while Bitcoin will follow in Q3, according to MetaMask co-founder Dan Finlay’s 27 February post.
A major update to MetaMask’s swap feature will soon allow users to pay transaction fees in any token they hold, with the ultimate goal of removing gas fees entirely:
“Longer term, we believe we can eliminate gas as a user-facing concern in nearly all interactions. (We’ll get to that!)”
Additionally, a redesigned home screen will provide a unified view of assets across multiple chains, eliminating the need for manual navigation.
As to why it is looking to offer a simpler, easy-to-use wallet, MetaMask explained:
“Users don’t want to think about another game mechanic every time they make an action.”
MetaMask is also transitioning from Externally Owned Accounts (EOAs) to smart-contract-based accounts, improving security and unlocking advanced features.
Unlike EOAs, which are controlled by private keys and susceptible to irreversible loss, Contract Accounts (CAs) enable recovery mechanisms and security checks.
The wallet will also adopt ERC-5792, allowing users to batch transactions—such as “Approve & Swap”—into a single click, saving time and reducing fees.
Another key update includes support for managing multiple Secret Recovery Phrases within a single wallet, further enhancing usability and security.
Increased Support for BTC & SOL in its Wallets
In line with its commitment to enhancing user experience, MetaMask will integrate support for Bitcoin (BTC) and Solana (SOL), allowing users to manage multiple crypto assets within a single wallet.
Finlay said in the interview:
“So these are simultaneously delivering some of the most popular blockchains, but, but they're also ensuring that we have smoothed out every part of our interface that allows new blockchains to be added seamlessly.”
Welcome from Users for MetaMask’s New Developments
X user fairo.eth praised MetaMask’s latest updates, suggesting the wallet may have lost market share to competitors like Phantom and Rabby.
Both rival wallets already support Solana, a key network for trading top-performing tokens from the 2024 meme coin surge.
