ChatGPT's CEO at OpenAI, Sam Altman, was suddenly dismissed by the board on the 18th of this month, citing "lack of transparency." However, after several reversals and significant employee departures, Altman ultimately confirmed his return to OpenAI as CEO. He is set to form a new board of directors.

Official Announcement from OpenAI

OpenAI officially announced today (the 30th) that Sam Altman will return as CEO, Mira Murati will serve as CTO, and Greg Brockman will resume the role of President.

Three out of four board members have resigned, leading to the formation of a new initial board. It will comprise former executives from Facebook and Salesforce, Bret Taylor, former US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo. D’Angelo is the sole remaining member of the previous board, while Bret Taylor will serve as the chair of the new board.

The Board Without the Vote’s Right

Microsoft, which holds a 49% stake in OpenAI, will join the board as a non-voting observer to gain deeper insights into OpenAI's operations but without formal voting rights in major decisions.

Sam: No Hostility

Previously, Ilya Sutskever voted in favour of removing Sam Altman, causing a stir. However, after almost all OpenAI employees threatened to resign if Sam Altman left, he changed his stance and stepped down from the board.

Sam Altman also mentioned that he doesn't hold any animosity towards Ilya Sutskever, the co-founder and Chief Scientist at OpenAI, for his dismissal.

"While Ilya will no longer serve on the board, we hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI."
