OpenAI Expands Into India With New Delhi Office And Local Team
OpenAI is set to open its first office in India later this year, establishing a direct presence in New Delhi to serve the country’s growing AI market.
The company's new office is intended to support the Indian government’s IndiaAI Mission and build artificial intelligence solutions tailored for the nation.
Why India Is A Key Focus For OpenAI
India has emerged as ChatGPT’s second-largest market globally, trailing only the United States, with weekly user numbers growing more than fourfold compared to last year.
OpenAI sees the country as a hub of talent and innovation, with a thriving developer ecosystem and strong government support for AI initiatives.
Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, said,
“Setting up our first office and creating a local team is a key step in our promise to bring advanced AI to more people across the country and to develop AI that is made for India and by India.”
Boosting Local Engagement With Students, Developers, And Businesses
India now has the highest number of students using ChatGPT worldwide.
OpenAI’s presence in New Delhi aims to provide better support for a diverse user base that includes students, educators, professionals, and developers.
Local businesses are already deploying OpenAI’s tools in areas such as AI-assisted farming, streamlining recruitment, and improving governance processes.
Government Partnerships And AI Literacy Initiatives
The Indian government has welcomed OpenAI’s expansion, highlighting the country’s strengths in digital infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise adoption.
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated,
“Because of strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and large-scale business solutions, India is well-placed to lead the next big changes driven by AI.”
OpenAI has also partnered with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to launch OpenAI Academy, an AI literacy programme aimed at increasing accessibility and understanding of AI technologies.
Affordable Plans And Rapid Adoption Driving Growth
In addition to the office launch, OpenAI is expanding its offerings in India.
The company recently introduced ChatGPT Go, a subscription plan priced at INR 399, making it one of the most affordable options globally.

Hiring Locally To Strengthen Operations
OpenAI is actively recruiting for positions in India to build a local team, with initial roles including sales positions requiring seven or more years of experience.
Currently, Pragya Misra leads public policy and partnerships in India, the only full-time employee in the country so far.
A larger local team is expected to enhance collaborations with developers, startups, businesses, and government bodies, while also shaping AI applications suited to the Indian context.
Upcoming Events To Engage India’s AI Community
Later this year, OpenAI plans to host its first Developer Day in India, uniting the country’s growing network of developers, businesses, and startups.
An Education Summit is also scheduled this month, highlighting the company’s focus on fostering AI literacy and supporting innovative solutions across sectors.
OpenAI has not yet confirmed the exact address of the New Delhi office, but further details about its activities and expansion plans will be shared in the coming months.
