Thousands of listeners were left without access to music and podcasts on Sunday after the music streaming service Spotify was down temporarily on Sunday. More than 40,000 people reported outages with the music platform on downdetector.com, a website that allows users to report problems with popular apps and services. The number of reports reached more than 9,000 by 11 am and over 15,000 as of 11.35 am per Downdetector.
Users who were using the desktop's Spotify app reported being greeted with the error message, "Something went wrong," neither were they able to play tracks on the platform. The Spotify phone app was also reported to be unresponsive to some users.
Spotify acknowledged the issue and posted on their X, saying "We're aware of some issues right now and are checking them out!"
In a matter of seconds, X was flooded with complaints about how their lives were distracted by the outage.Some users stated that they were losing my mind at having to now sit in silence.
While another said: "Why is Spotify down I NEED TO DO THE DISHES."
To Spotify's credit, it tried its best to reply to as many users as possible regarding their concerns and even gave some solutions to troubleshoot their issues. To aid users during the outage, the Spotify support team also recommended that users try logging out, restarting their device and logging back in.
Close to 62% of the users faced issues related to the app, with 26% facing audio streaming problems. 12% of users faced website issues. Spotify was only able to resolve the issue three hours later, posting an update saying "Everything was looking much better. The App appeared to be working normally.'
As of the end of June, Spotify reported 626 million total monthly active users, a sequential gain of 11 million, including 246 million Premium subscribers (adding 7 million in the second quarter). The company reported a record quarterly net profit of 274 million on revenue of 3.81 billion, up 20% year over year.
