OpenAI Expands Sora App Across Asia Bringing AI Video Creation to New Audiences
OpenAI has opened the doors to its Sora app in Thailand, Vietnam, and Taiwan, giving creators across Asia access to its advanced AI video generation platform.
The move follows the app’s rapid adoption in the United States and Canada, where it surpassed one million downloads in just five days after its early September launch.
How Does Sora Transform Video Creation
Powered by Sora 2, OpenAI’s latest video model allows users to generate original videos, remix existing content, and explore a personal feed tailored to their interests.
One standout feature, Cameos, enables users to step directly into their videos after a brief verification process, capturing both their likeness and voice.
Character Cameos extend this creativity further, allowing virtually anything—from pets and personal objects to original designs—to be transformed into reusable characters that can appear in multiple videos.
To celebrate Halloween, the app even includes classic characters such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and Jack-O-Lanterns in its starter pack.
Why Local Language Support Matters
The Sora app supports local languages, including Thai, enabling creators to produce videos that reflect their culture, humour, and style.
Woody Milintachinda, a Thai creator, said:
“Sora allows me to bring ideas to life in a way that immediately resonates with audiences. They can see and feel the story unfold. It has also given me a unique platform to share my experiences with a wide community of creators and storytellers not just in Thailand but the world, inspiring new forms of connection and creativity. With Sora, the creative possibilities truly feel limitless.”
Safety and User Control at the Forefront
OpenAI emphasises responsible use of the app.
Videos carry both visible animated watermarks and invisible digital C2PA watermarks to authenticate content created on the platform.
Teen users face daily limits on video generation, with additional safeguards in place for Cameos, while parents can manage feed limits, personalisation, and messaging settings through ChatGPT-based controls.
The system also filters unsafe content such as pornography, terrorist propaganda, and self-harm material, with moderation and reporting mechanisms to address misuse.
How the App Fits Into a Larger AI Evolution
The original Sora model, launched in February 2024, marked an early milestone for AI video generation, demonstrating object permanence and foundational video behaviours.
Sora 2 builds on this foundation with more advanced world simulation capabilities and storyboarding tools for longer clips of up to 25 seconds for Pro users via the web interface.
OpenAI plans to continue developing Sora 2 for both app and API access, while retaining all previously created content in users’ Sora libraries.
Could Sora Reshape Creative Culture in Asia
Coinlive sees the expansion of Sora into Asia as more than a simple product launch.
By giving creators tools to weave themselves and their ideas into hyper-realistic videos, OpenAI is opening avenues for cultural storytelling and digital experimentation that were previously inaccessible.
The challenge will be balancing creative freedom with safe, ethical usage, while exploring how AI-driven video can influence local content trends and social media narratives.
Sora’s arrival signals a shift in how creators might engage with audiences—blurring the line between imagination and reality.
