Elon Musk is officially serving under President Trump as a special government employee, according to a White House official.
This designation means that Musk-the billionaire tech entrepreneur who has been a force within the new Trump administration-is not working as a volunteer but also not a full-time federal employee.
This was confirmed by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt during an interview with CNN on yesterday.
According to the Justice Department website, a "special government employee" is anyone who works, or is expected to work for the government for 130 days or less in a 365-day period.
The website also states that while a "special government employee" is subjected to most rules, but those rules are sometimes implemented on them on a less restrictive way.
This title was given to Musk after he took over DOGE, also known as the Department of Government Efficiency, which is looking to significantly slash public spending.
In a X post, Musk wrote that he would rather prefer the title of a IT consultant, who helps the government to solve IT infrastructure in order to make the government work.
