According to Fox Business reporter Eleanor Terrett, the U.S. Senate Banking Committee, led by Senator Tim Scott, will establish its first subcommittee specifically responsible for cryptocurrency. The subcommittee will be constructed in reference to the Republican Financial Services Subcommittee established by Patrick McHenry in 2023.  

Senate aides confirmed that Senator Cynthia Lummis has been preliminarily selected as the chairperson of the subcommittee, awaiting a vote by the full committee. It is reported that the vote to approve Cynthia Lummis and the new Republican and Democratic members (still being decided) may take place next Thursday, when Trump's nomination hearing for Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Scott Turner will be held.

▌JPMorgan: MiCA Regulation May Increase Adoption of Euro Stablecoins

The EU's landmark Crypto-Asset Market (MiCA) regulation, which takes effect on December 30, 2024, could boost the market share of euro-pegged stablecoins, according to JPMorgan analysts.  

Currently, euro-pegged stablecoins account for only 0.12% of the stablecoin market, but MiCA could improve that by encouraging European banks and financial institutions to adopt euro stablecoins to meet customer needs and blockchain-based financial settlements, JPMorgan analysts said in a report. Notable examples include Societe Generale's EURCV stablecoin and BBVA's planned stablecoin in partnership with Visa, analysts said.

As of Jan. 9, cryptocurrency betting platform Polymarket is offering users 4% odds that President Biden pardons former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried, and 2% odds that he pardons Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht. As of the time of publication, users have bet more than $5 million on SBF’s odds and $1.2 million on Ulbricht’s odds.  

It is unclear whether President Biden intends to issue more pardons or commutations before the end of his term.

▌Several crypto company CEOs are vying for access to Trump himself

With less than two weeks to Trump's inauguration, crypto industry executives are vying for access to Trump himself and seats on the planned cryptocurrency advisory committee, which is expected to be established shortly after Trump takes office. Industry insiders intend to use the committee, which may be composed of about two dozen CEOs and founders, to influence the new administration's digital asset policy, according to people familiar with the matter.  

Most of the potential appointees already have a relationship with Trump and have visited him in recent months, people familiar with the matter said. Trump and his inner circle, including David Sacks, the incoming White House artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency expert, are still weighing potential appointees. Since Trump's re-election in November, Mar-a-Lago has hosted a large number of crypto industry figures, including Kris Marszalek, CEO of Crypto.com, Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, etc. In addition, Circle, Coinbase, Kraken, Ondo and other companies have pledged to donate to Trump's inauguration.
